Liner Notes:
Talk Like An Egyptian
The rug weavers of Araby often work imperfection into their carpeted art, for only the divine are beyond error. Maybe Sam felt like he didn't deserve to be on the same astral plane. There were questions to be answered. Riddles to solve.
Hence: Sham. And the Pharaohs. From a time when majesties were gods on an eternal journey. Osiris consorting with the fertile floodplain of Isis, the revenge of Horus the falcon over Seth. When Cecil B. DeMille ruled the earth.
He had a great leer. King Lear, or better, Othello. With his goatee and No. African robes, he was the moorish wolf at the door. Hey there, Lil' Red Riding Hood. Come on in. Let's do the hully gully; no... How about the jelly belly; no... Yes, the Wooly Bully. And I'd like to count this one bi-lingually.
Domingo Samudio was of two worlds, a heaven and earth comprised of his pop top 40 MGM persona and the southwest Tex-Mex-Hex blend that he grew from as a showband riding out of Dallas on a hearse. Before they relocated to Memphis, the band was named the West Dallas Pharaohs. Sam himself was a Navy vet. "Mystery and magic with a beat" was their calling card, and as for shamming, "I just sang, and danced and cut up".
Actually, the vibe was more Bedouin than Akhenaton. Actually actually, Sam himself was more Turkish/Punjab than Ramses III. But hey, you crank that countoff in the ultimo hours of Saturday night at Brownie's and who even cares?
He ruled through the middle years of the sixties, our most hallowed Re, lord of upper and lower Aegypt, cackling all your favorite hits, most of which are hear interpreatated by your favorite Nefertiti-lovin' artists. Truly hieroglyphic.--Lenny Kaye.
